The Town of Estancia required a facility that would provide the small community a “living room” center appealing to all ages. Set in Estancia’s heart, the beautiful Lake Arthur Park inspired the library’s siting, functional distribution and architecture.

An open plan privileges the circulation desk as its central element to enhance staff supervision, while reading areas and collections are arranged along the library’s north side to benefit from park views and north light. Adjacent to the circulation desk, a Children’s Library occupies the building’s southwest corner and features a semi-circular “story kiva” – an informal theater-like setting for storytelling, instruction and comfortable reading on upholstered risers. Furniture, partial height book stacks and varying ceiling planes define teen, adult, computer access and quiet study areas – all benefiting from natural light and select views of the park. A quiet history room, the library’s only walled space, serves as a flexible meeting venue showcasing regional artifacts and an inviting fireplace.

The library’s architecture is modernist in form and detail - based on an asymmetrical composition of solid and transparent planes and volumes. Functional and contextually appropriate materials including glass, steel, cement plaster and stacked stone veneer complement the park setting and Town vernacular.
