“The final design relates well to the site, the adjacent building, views, access, identity, and the building inside functions as an excellent campus Library. [RMKM] is a firm of very talented and responsible architects.”

The Zollinger Library project performs many tasks on the UNM Gallup campus. With no existing library facility, the campus library was buried amidst classroom and administrative spaces. The Zollinger Library consolidates the collection into an independent and approachable facility to make access to learning resources easier. In addition to the new library, the project included the renovation backfill of the former library and miscellaneous existing Student and Support Service spaces.

A dynamic plan arranges book stacks along a subtle radial geometry to provide optimal circulation desk control and respond to the physical restraints of the challenging hillside site and dramatic views of the surrounding landscape. Positioned along the main campus arrival drive, the library also provides an important “edge” and “first impression” to the institution.

UNM Gallup serves a predominantly Native American student body. This influenced the interior design palate, which includes wood beamed ceilings, architectural woodwork, soft southwestern colors and natural materials that combine to create an environment that is warm and inviting. As a focal point of the library RMKM designed a reading room to celebrate Native American culture. The high-ceilinged square room, rotated to align with the cardinal axes, features a large picture window that frames a sacred mountain view.
