UNM TAOS ARTS CENTER
Relocating and replacing outdated facilities, this project transforms UNM to a center of Studio Arts Education in Northern New Mexico. Accommodating a variety of art media and activities, flexibility was of utmost importance for the new arts wing on the UNM Taos branch campus.
Highly functional and well equipped studios for drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, ceramics and jewelry-making feature an abundance of natural light from operable windows, high ceilings and open plans that can be easily modified to respond to changes in curriculum, technology, or learning pedagogy. Sealed concrete floors, tackable wall surfaces and an exposed steel roof structure establish a simple, durable and low maintenance interior capable of adapting to varied uses. A “working courtyard” seamlessly connects to the outdoors and effectively expands interior floor space. Studios surround an interior commons with fireplace that serves as a place for student and faculty interaction, informal meetings or lectures and as a gallery for the display of student artwork.
Stepped, multilevel building massing and stucco colors inspired by the landscape help to ensure a building that “fits into” its natural and built context.
