The UNM Cancer Center is one of the top fifty cancer research and treatment facilities in the USA. It is a NCI designated facility which specializes in cutting edge cancer treatment and research. The 205,000 SF, five-level building combines the expression of the high tech nature of treatment with concern and sensitivity for the multicultural patient population that it serves.

The ‘patient first’ facility is a healing environment. Connection with nature is a component found throughout the facility. From each corridor of the clinic one is visually connected with the exterior. There are numerous exterior courts and balconies for public use.  Many spaces offer themselves for quiet contemplation while others allow for group gatherings. The top floor of the facility is dedicated to those enduring chemotherapy.  These patients have fantastic views of the Sandia and Jemez mountains and the use of a large planted balcony.

This facility provides first rate cancer care for New Mexico. The design allows expansion capacity for the future and education space for the enrichment of the healthcare professionals and community alike. The building is designed using many sustainable concepts including a concrete rain screen panel skin, green roofs, site water quality control, and exterior shading.
