This project is a major expansion to the existing Albuquerque Museum and represents phase one of a two-phase master plan. The program required expanded and improved facilities to enhance the numerous programs dedicated to art, history, and education. Program spaces included a new entrance lobby, special events hall, changing exhibits gallery, museum store, and museum café. In addition, “behind the scenes” functions including collections and exhibits preparations and materials storage were also identified. Site program requirements called for a new entrance plaza, outdoor performance amphitheater, and extensive outdoor sculpture gardens to accommodate an existing and growing collection. One of the most important project goals identified was that the architecture of the “new” Albuquerque Museum help the institution “raise its voice” in the community.

The Nature Center, which is situated along the flood plain in the Bosque area adjacent to the Animas River in Farmington, New Mexico, provides the City of Farmington with an economically constructed and operated Center. The building is organized into three major components that step away from the water’s edge. Each zone is represented with a distinct material on both the exterior and interior. The observation room forms the prow of the composition which focuses the viewer north over the prairie toward a constructed lake. This feature directly links the education component of the building with an outdoor environmental classroom.

The Farmington Gateway Museum was designed under the premise that provocative and beautiful buildings are good for cities and attract the public. Approached by the design team from the point of view of “architecture as art,” this project was conceived of as a sculptural composition of forms developed to be boldly expressive of the building’s internal functions. The floor plan is organized around a curving “great room” lobby that provides a dynamic introduction to Farmington and the region, access to all major building functions, and dramatic views of the Animas River.
