“The Animas Park facilities are additional gems, enhancing the surroundings and encouraging the personal involvement of the visitor, exactly what they were envisioned to do.”

The Nature Center is situated within a unique northern New Mexico environment: a nature preserve adjacent to the Animas River. To invite and educate users of all ages about its environment, the Center incorporates the building program, a system of pathways that engage the surrounding environment and an outdoor classroom.

Suggestive of a rural compound that has gracefully evolved, three interconnected building volumes with distinct programs and materials loosely attach to a central spine. A glazed observation room forms the prow of the composition and focuses the viewer north over a grassy wetland toward a constructed pond. Spaces for exhibits, hands-on activities, education seminars and administration/service all incorporate passive solar design, natural ventilation and daylighting. The informal, durable and low-maintenance design of the Nature Center compliments its setting and educational program, emphasizing the environment and sustainability.
